So, to report back, I accomplished zero of my October devotional goals! That is so way, I will still have an ancestor altar for Hallows, but didn't make any progress on my other goal to start early and have ongoing ancestor work. It's interesting that as soon as I stated the goal, everything went sideways in my life. There were family illnesses (to the point of needing a doctor's visit for one of us), issues with our kid's extracurricular activities, and a feeling of general chaos. Basically, there are times when you're on top of shit... and times when shit's on top of you! So I think I will move my October goal to November. Instead of dismantling my altar completely, I will reorganize it someplace workable (it takes over the whole dining table for Hallows) and keep it up ongoing. At least, let's hope I will.

Ok, back to report as well. I totally forgot about this thread in all of the hustle and bustle this month! Thanks for bumping the thread and reporting back, Admin. Re: The vow I made to the land spirits to plant three trees- done. Planted three very small evergreens that settled in nicely and will just need a bit of tending to over the next couple of years until they can better compete with the surrounding vegetation. Re: Planting a garden to use the flowers next year for Astarte's shrine- done. The small garden is planted with a variety of fall bulbs that should bloom throughout the spring. I'm going to throw a couple layers of landscape fabric over it until the ground freezes to try and deter the critters from digging up the bulbs for a snack. In the spring I'd like to plant some lily and dahlia bulbs for summer blooms. Re: Continue leaving wildlife-friendly offerings for the land spirits- done. My backyard is currently doing some brisk business in the food department for the spirits and critters. Looking forward to hearing how everyone else's month went and getting ready for November!

My plans didn't work out, because about six days after I posted, I decided to chuck it all in and simplify my practice. So I've just been doing morning devotions to Heru-sa-Aset, evening devotions to Sobek, and moon rites to Hekate. I got to this point where I felt I was focusing too much on the festivals, and not enough on my gods, so I've gone back to the drawing board, so to speak, to try to figure out how best to move forward.
I think all I want to do for November is continue how I've been going with my devotions, and keep working at finding a yearly cycle that works for me.

If you have roses, you may want to add them in there, and let them fruit. The hips give some vital food to the critters. I didn't know that, thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to do some research to see what kinds of rose bushes are native to this area and check the local nurseries in the spring. If you can, I recommend heirloom or heritage rose breeds. I have seven in my small yard (three climbing roses and four shrubs). They look nice and, once they get big enough, they provide nesting areas for smaller birds and cover for some ground animals. I got all of mine here: www.heirloomroses.com

My October goals are still in progress being that it's the 31st today - happy Samhain/Beltaine/Halloween to those who celebrate the date, by the way!
I've just finished whipping up a nice big batch of Malaysian curry for ofrenda and have assorted sweets and cakes to go with it. We don't tend to get trick or treaters much around here so much like last year I'm planning to leave these outside for the dead with a candle once it starts getting dark.
