Some time ago I stumbled across a group on Facebook that posted images of shrines and altars they made. One of my favorite things, when I looked at them all, was the realization that so many people have different ideas about what belongs on them. Some go the Wiccan route, with a cup, a bowl, an athame and a statue flanked by candles...others festoon theirs with seasonal flowers and offerings...some put so many trinkets on them it looks like a glorious magpie's nest. All of them are different, all of them are beautiful, all of them are art for our deities and spirits.
Even though I'm in the midst of a move and so am packing a lot of things up, I try to keep my shrines going. They will be some of the very last things I dismantle, and very first things I put up in the new home. My three main shrines are one to Dionysus, one to Hecate, and one to Ladon. They're very sparse compared to some of the shrines I've seen (gods above and below, you people are creative!), but I've started trying to offer my best liquors and freshly baked bread I've made myself on regular occasions.

I've also tried not to limit myself because of my resources. As you can see, only one of my shrines boasts a "proper" statue. For the other two, I used a picture that I found (all credit to the artist, whose name I have never learned) and an incense burner I bought at Walmart that felt like a good representation. The flowers I picked myself from my yard, and the rest are trinkets and gifts to the deities...for Dionysus I've been gifting liquor (not just wine)...for Hecate an alligator head, crystal I found, and palmistry tool...and for Ladon a "sacrificial goat" full of "precious coins" from various countries that my husband and I have collected.
