Do you think modern paganism is getting away from the magick and wisdom of ancient deities and polytheism? Given the forum, I'm on, I assume it's not lost here, but I've gone to other forums before and I've noticed, alot of pagans aren't really polytheistic. In fact, I feel like modern-day paganism and witchcraft is heading toward a more agnostic and atheist point of view. Let me explain. I recently told a story on another forum about why I was thinking about worshipping a sex-positive goddesses. Even after I explained that my strict upbringing caused some of my sexual blockages, as well as I have tried the mundane stuff such as dating sites, etc. And one of them had the nerve to ask if I've considered therapy. Which I have and I've tried it, when you are a poor, low-income student in a small town, it's hard to find quality therapy anyway. Not to mention psycho-therapy is such a modern ideology that it still has it's kinks to work out.
But just the assumption from another pagan that apparently therapy and dating sites work better than worship seems to denote some sort of insecurity with polytheistic/non-Christian faiths. Don't get me wrong, I understand when people say that you shouldn't depend 100% on a god, but if the average Christian tends to split their faith between modern, mundane inventions and their god, why couldn't a non-Christian polytheistic witch do the same? Don't get me wrong I've met agnostic and atheistic pagans before but most people in a pagan community are trying to get support from like-minded theists.
I also understand that most modern pagans are basically Wiccan or Wiccan-based and seem to only depend on two gods, which to me is basically a glorified version of the modern-day monotheistic Christian view. I'm not saying I hate Wicca, it has it's good points but I feel like within the pagan community, Wicca is the most watered down and commercialized pagan religion ever. I know it's not a true ancient religion, I know it's history but still it was supposed to be influenced by ancient beliefs and philosophies of the early polytheistic pagans. What happened to Wicca from it's birth in the 1940s/1950s to now?
